Walking; Are you doing it properly?

We know that regular walks can improve your mood, lower blood pressure and increase bone density. It’s also a great way to kickstart weight loss or ease back into working out after some time off, but are you doing it properly? Walking is remarkably easy to get wrong, and walking injuries do happen, even though we all do it every day!

Your feet are one of the primary body parts that tend to bear the brunt of walking injuries. It’s very easy to fall into bad habits and these lead to all sorts of painful consequences for our feet, ankles, knees, hips, backs and shoulders. In short, it can affect your entire body.

           Your walking style

A good walking technique will help to avoid or mitigate all kinds of problems and your general health will benefit hugely.

Each of us has a unique walking style. Don’t try to take steps that are shorter or longer than you find comfortable. You’ll strain muscles and put unnecessary stress on your spine. If you’re looking to speed up and burn more calories concentrate on increasing the number of steps you take per minute but don’t forget to add to them gradually to avoid injury.

As you walk your heel should touch the ground first and then your foot rolls down from the heel to the toes. Then push off with the toes and repeat.

           Footwear

Choosing the right footwear is extremely important.

Think about the terrain and the activities you’ll be doing when considering footwear.

It might seem obvious, but wear properly fitting shoes. Try on different brands and sizes to make sure the fit is just right.

Choose the right socks. Hiking socks will keep your feet dry, less sweaty and cushioned. Merino wool is a great choice as it wicks away moisture.

Keep your shoes clean and dry after you’ve worn them.

Foot Health Matters: Expert Insights and Tips

Discover essential tips and expert insights on maintaining optimal foot health. Learn about the importance of regular check-ups, proper footwear, hygiene, and more.

When it comes to overall well-being, one aspect that often gets overlooked is foot health. Our feet bear the weight of our entire body and are essential for mobility, yet they are frequently taken for granted. To shed light on the importance of foot health and offer valuable insights, we’ve put together some top tips:

           Regular Check-ups are Crucial

Many people only seek help when they experience pain or discomfort in their feet, but by then, the issue may have progressed. Regular check-ups can help identify problems early on and prevent more serious conditions.

           Invest in Good Footwear

Wearing ill-fitting shoes or those without proper arch support can lead to a range of foot problems. Invest in shoes that fit well and provide adequate support, especially if you have specific foot conditions.

           Pay Attention to Hygiene

Maintaining proper foot hygiene is essential. Wash your feet daily, dry them thoroughly, and don't forget to moisturise. Keeping your feet clean and moisturised can prevent dry skin, cracking, and fungal infections.

           Nail Care Matters

Ingrown toenails can be painful and troublesome. It’s a myth to trim your toenails straight across. Nails should be cut following the shape of the end of the toe, so they should be curved. But… don’t dig down the sides as this can lead to ingrowing toenails. If cut straight across, they leave sharp edges which can cause issues. If you have an ingrown toenail, don't attempt to fix it yourself – seek professional help.

           Manage Diabetes Effectively

For individuals with diabetes, foot health is especially critical. Diabetes can lead to nerve damage and poor circulation in the feet, increasing the risk of infections and ulcers. Regular foot check-ups are essential for diabetes management.

           Stretch and Exercise

Podiatrists often recommend foot exercises to improve strength and flexibility. Incorporate simple exercises like calf and hamstring stretches into your daily routine. These can help prevent injuries and improve overall foot health.

           Address Foot Pain Promptly

Foot pain can be a sign of underlying issues. Don't ignore it or rely solely on over-the-counter pain relievers. Seek professional evaluation and treatment.

Custom Orthotics Can Make a Difference

If you have specific foot conditions or recurrent problems, custom orthotics may be beneficial.

           Custom orthotics

can provide personalised support and alleviate pain associated with conditions like flat feet, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendinopathy.

           Don't Ignore Heel Pain

Heel pain is a common complaint, often associated with conditions like plantar fasciitis. Early intervention, such as stretching exercises, orthotics, or physical therapy, can prevent it from becoming a chronic issue.

           Educate Yourself

Understanding your feet and common foot problems can empower you to take better care of them. Knowledge is the first step towards maintaining healthy feet.

Our feet are the unsung heroes of our body, supporting us through every step of our lives. Neglecting their health can lead to a range of problems that affect our overall well-being. Remember, foot health matters – take care of your feet, and they will take care of you!

Why? Because it's the foundation on which many movements and exercises are built.

The ankle joint is a complex structure comprising bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Its flexibility and stability greatly influence our ability to perform various exercises effectively and safely. From running and squatting to jumping and even yoga poses, a proper range of motion in the ankle joint is fundamental.

Let's consider the mechanics: when you perform a squat, for instance, your ankles flex, allowing you to lower your body while keeping your heels on the ground. Limited ankle mobility can force compensations in other areas, leading to improper form and potential injuries. Similarly, during running or jumping exercises, the ankle needs to flex and extend properly to absorb shock and propel you forward efficiently.

Furthermore, adequate ankle range of motion can prevent injuries. Tightness or restricted motion in the ankles can cause strain not only on the ankles themselves but also on the knees, hips, and lower back. This imbalance can result in overuse injuries, such as Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis , and affect your overall exercise routine.

So, how can we improve ankle range of motion? Incorporating specific exercises and stretches into our fitness regimen can significantly enhance ankle flexibility and mobility. Simple movements like ankle circles, calf stretches, and heel raises can help loosen up tightness and improve the joint's flexibility.

Additionally, balance exercises play a crucial role in ankle health. Standing on one foot or using balance boards helps strengthen the muscles around the ankle, enhancing stability and reducing the risk of sprains.

For those engaged in sports that heavily rely on ankle mobility, such as basketball or dancing, prioritising ankle flexibility becomes even more critical. Regular stretching and mobility exercises specific to the demands of the sport can aid in preventing injuries and enhancing performance.

Remember, though, that like any other joint, it's essential not to push beyond your limits when trying to improve ankle range of motion. Gradual progress is key to avoiding injury.

In conclusion, the ankle's range of motion is not to be overlooked in our exercise routines. It's the cornerstone of various movements and plays a pivotal role in preventing injuries. Incorporating ankle-specific exercises and stretches can significantly benefit overall performance and contribute to a safer and more effective workout.

So, the next time you lace up your trainers or hit the gym, don't forget to give your ankles the attention they deserve. Your body will thank you for it!

Understanding Posterior Heel Pain

Posterior heel pain refers to discomfort localised at the back of the heel. It often arises from conditions affecting the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the human body. This robust tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone (calcaneus) and plays a pivotal role in walking, running, and jumping. When the Achilles tendon is subjected to excessive stressor experiences degenerative changes, it can lead to persistent pain and functional limitations.

           What are the common causes?

The cause of posterior heel pain can vary widely. It may be attributed to conditions such as Achilles tendinitis, Haglund's deformity, retrocalcaneal bursitis, or Achilles tendonosis. Overuse, improper footwear, and biomechanical abnormalities can exacerbate these conditions. Identifying the specific cause is crucial for tailoring an effective treatment plan.

           Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis, characterised by inflammation of the Achilles tendon, is a leading cause of posterior heel pain. This condition frequently arises from repetitive stress, especially in athletes engaged in activities that involve frequent pushing off or sudden bursts of speed. Runners, basketball players, and dancers are particularly susceptible.

           Treatment Options for Achilles Tendinitis:

Early intervention is key to managing Achilles tendinitis. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) can help alleviate acute symptoms. Physiotherapy and targeted exercises can improve tendon strength and flexibility. In some cases, advanced interventions like extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) [link to ESWT page] may be recommended.

           Haglund's Deformity

Haglund's deformity, often referred to as "pumpbump," is another condition contributing to posterior heel pain. It involves the enlargement of the bony prominence at the back of the heel, which can irritate the Achilles tendon and surrounding tissues.

           Managing Haglund's Deformity:

Customised footwear with padding around the heel, along with orthotic inserts, can help alleviate pressure on the affected area. Physical therapy focused on stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as modalities like ultrasound and laser therapy [link to laser page], may also be beneficial. In severe cases, surgical intervention to remove excess bone may be recommended.

           Retrocalcaneal Bursitis

Retrocalcaneal bursitis is characterised by inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac located between the Achilles tendon and the calcaneus. This condition can arise from excessive friction or pressure on the bursa.

           Treatment Approaches for Retrocalcaneal Bursitis:

Initial management often involves rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications. Physical therapy to improve ankle range of motion and strengthen the surrounding muscles can be highly effective.

Posterior heel pain, frequently attributed to Achilles tendon-related issues, can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. Early diagnosis and targeted interventions are crucial for a successful recovery.

As a podiatrist, I've witnessed the impact of plantar fasciitis on the lives of my patients. This common foot ailment causes pain in the heel, but with the right understanding and treatment, it can be managed effectively.

In this blog post, we'll explore the causes behind plantar fasciitis and delve into a range of treatment options to provide you with a comprehensive guide on addressing this condition.

What are some of the causes of Plantar Fasciitis?

           Plantar fasciitis

, characterised by inflammation of the plantar fascia, stems from a variety of factors. These include:

           Overuse and Repetitive Stress:

High-impact activities, such as running or prolonged standing, can strain the plantar fascia, leading to micro-tears and subsequent inflammation.

           Improper Footwear:

Ill-fitting shoes or those lacking proper arch support can contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis. We actively encourage our patients to invest in supportive footwear.

           Biomechanical Irregularities:

Individuals with abnormal gait patterns, high arches, or flat feet are more predisposed to plantar fasciitis. These structural differences put excess strain on the plantar fascia.

           Weight-Related Factors:

Carrying excess body weight places additional pressure on the feet, making overweight individuals more susceptible to this condition.

           Tight Achilles Tendon:

A shortened or tight Achilles tendon can lead to increased stress on the plantar fascia, contributing to inflammation and discomfort.

           What are the treatment options?

           Rest and Activity Modification:

Recommending patients to reduce or modify activities that aggravate the condition is often the initial step. We may suggest low-impact alternatives like swimming or cycling.

           Orthotic Inserts and Supportive Footwear:

           Custom orthotics

and appropriate footwear with arch support are invaluable in providing stability and alleviating pain associated with plantar fasciitis.

           Stretching and Strengthening Exercises:

Prescribing specific exercises targeting the calf muscles, Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia can significantly enhance flexibility and strength, aiding in recovery.

           Physiotherapy:

Collaborating with a physiotherapist can be transformative. They employ specialised techniques and exercises to address the root causes of plantar fasciitis. Our therapist at Wickford Physiotherapy can help.

           Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT):

ESWT is a non-invasive procedure utilizing shock waves to stimulate healing in the affected tissue. It has shown promise in treating plantar fasciitis.

           Surgical Intervention (in rare instances):

Surgery is typically considered a last resort when conservative treatments prove ineffective. Procedures may involve releasing the plantar fascia or addressing contributing factors.

Plantar fasciitis can be painful to live with, but as a seasoned podiatrist, I've seen countless patients regain their mobility and quality of life with the right approach. By understanding the underlying causes and tailoring a comprehensive treatment plan, we can guide our patients towards a pain-free future.

Sports Injuries and Foot Care: Expert Advice

Learn about common sports-related foot injuries and discover expert advice on prevention and care to maintain optimal foot health during athletic activities.

Participating in sports and physical activities is an excellent way to stay fit, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and enjoy some competitive spirit. However, athletes, both professional and amateur, are at a higher risk of sustaining injuries, particularly in the feet and lower limbs. These injuries can have a significant impact on an athlete's performance and overall well-being.

One of the first steps in foot care for athletes is to understand the most common sports injuries. These include ankle sprains, stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and shin pain. Each injury requires specific care and treatment, so it's essential to recognise the signs and symptoms and seek professional advice promptly.

           Warm-Up and Stretch:

Proper warm-up exercises and stretching routines are vital in preventing sports injuries. Prioritise dynamic warm-ups that mimic the movements of your sport and engage the lower limbs. Focus on stretching the calves, hamstrings, and Achilles tendons to improve flexibility and reduce the risk of strains or tears.

           Choose the Right Footwear:

Selecting appropriate footwear is crucial for any sporting activity. Different sports demand specific shoes that provide adequate support and cushioning for the feet. Consult with a sports shoe specialist or a podiatrist to ensure that your footwear is the correct size and offers the necessary stability for your chosen sport. Replace worn-out shoes regularly to maintain optimal support.

           Gradual Training and Conditioning:

Avoid sudden increases in training intensity or duration, as they can lead to overuse injuries. Gradually increase your training volume and intensity to allow your body, including your feet and lower limbs, to adapt to the demands placed upon them. Incorporate cross-training and rest days into your schedule to prevent overloading the same muscles and joints continuously.

           Listen to Your Body:

Paying attention to your body's signals is crucial for preventing injuries. If you experience pain or discomfort in your feet or lower limbs, don't ignore it. Rest, ice, compress, and elevate the affected area (R.I.C.E) and seek professional advice if the pain persists. Ignoring warning signs can lead to more severe injuries and prolonged recovery times.

           Strengthen the Feet and Ankles:

Strengthening exercises specifically targeting the feet and ankles can help improve stability and reduce the risk of injuries. Simple exercises like toe curls, heel raises, and balance exercises can enhance the strength and coordination of the muscles supporting the feet. Consider incorporating these exercises into your regular training routine.

           Get Regular Check-Ups:

Even if you don't have any existing foot problems or injuries, it's beneficial to have regular check-ups with a podiatrist. We can assess your foot health, identify any potential issues, and provide preventative care advice tailored to your individual needs.

If you're unsure about foot care techniques, injury prevention, or appropriate treatment methods, don't hesitate to seek professional guidance. Podiatrists have the expertise and knowledge to provide personalised advice and care based on your specific requirements.

            come to the rescue!

As podiatrists, we understand the vital role that proper arch support plays in maintaining healthy feet. The arches of our feet act as natural shock absorbers, absorbing the impact of each step we take. However, when the arches are not adequately supported, it can lead to various foot conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, flat feet, and overpronation. This is where Archies flip flops truly excel.

Archies flip flops are designed with a unique orthotic footbed, providing exceptional arch support. Unlike traditional flat flipflops, Archies incorporate a built-in arch contour that helps distribute weight evenly, reducing strain on the feet and lower limbs. This arch support feature helps align the feet and improve overall posture, promoting better balance and stability.

Beyond their arch support, Archies flip flops are crafted with utmost comfort in mind. They feature a soft, durable, and lightweight foam material that moulds to the shape of your feet. This personalised fit ensures maximum comfort, allowing you to wear them all day without any discomfort or fatigue. With a sleek and minimalist design, Archies flip flops effortlessly combine style and functionality, making them suitable for various occasions.

Archies flip flops have gained popularity among podiatrists due to their ability to alleviate pain caused by common foot conditions. The arch support helps to reduce stress on the plantar fascia, providing relief for individuals suffering from plantar fasciitis. The anatomical design also aids those with flat feet by offering the necessary arch lift and support. Moreover, Archies flip flops help correct overpronation, a common issue where the feet roll inward excessively, leading to imbalances and pain.

When it comes to choosing the perfect pair of flip flops, Archies Flip Flops stand head and shoulders above the rest. With their unparalleled arch support, comfort, and style, these flip flops are a game-changer for individuals seeking relief from foot pain and discomfort. From the perspective of a podiatrist, investing in Archies flip flops is a smart decision to ensure the health and happiness of your feet throughout the summer and beyond. Say goodbye to uncomfortable footwear and say hello to a summer filled with comfort and style!

Feet are the foundation of the body, and their proper functioning is essential to overall health and well-being. However, many people suffer from foot pain or discomfort, which can have a significant impact on their quality of life. Custom orthotics are a popular and effective way to improve foot function and reduce pain.

           What are custom orthotics?

They are medical devices that are designed to support and align the feet properly. They are custom-made to fit the specific contours of a person's feet, providing optimal support and comfort. Orthotics can be made from a variety of materials, including foam, plastic, and carbon fibre, depending on the specific needs of the patient.

           Why are they important?

They are essential for people with various foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis, flat feet, high arches, and arthritis. They provide the necessary support and stability to the feet, allowing them to function correctly. By improving foot function, orthotics can also help alleviate pain in other parts of the body, such as the knees, hips, and lower back.

One of the main benefits of custom orthotics is that they are designed to fit the unique contours of each patient's feet. This ensures that they provide the best possible support and comfort, which can be particularly important for people with more severe foot conditions. Custom orthotics can also be adjusted as needed to provide the best possible fit and support over time.

How can they reduce foot pain?

They can reduce foot pain in several ways. They can improve foot function, reduce pressure on certain parts of the foot, and provide cushioning for the feet. For example, people with flat feet may experience pain in the arch of their foot because the foot is not properly supported. Custom orthotics can provide the necessary support to the arch, reducing pain and discomfort.

Similarly, people with plantar fasciitis may experience pain in the heel or arch of their foot due to inflammation of the plantar fascia. Custom orthotics can provide cushioning and support to this area, reducing pressure and relieving pain. Orthotics can also help reduce pain in other parts of the body by improving foot function and reducing the stress on other joints.

If you are experiencing foot pain or discomfort, it is essential to consult with a podiatrist to determine whether custom orthotics may be right for you. We have had excellent results treating heel pain, flatfoot deformities and children’s lower limb problems. We use fully bespoke

Celebrate National Walking Month by embracing the numerous health benefits of walking. Learn about proper foot care, suitable footwear, and tips for walking in various terrains and weather conditions.

May is National Walking Month, an ideal opportunity to encourage people to embrace walking more frequently. Walking is one of the simplest and most accessible forms of exercise, offering numerous health benefits such as enhanced cardiovascular health, weight management, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases.

           Foot Health

Maintaining good foot health is crucial for an active lifestyle. Proper foot care includes:

Regularly washing and thoroughly drying your feet.

Trimming toenails straight across to prevent ingrown nails.

Inspecting your feet for cuts, blisters, or other issues that could lead to infections if left untreated.

           Choosing the Right Footwear

Selecting appropriate footwear is essential for comfortable walking. Ill-fitting shoes can cause blisters, calluses, and ingrown toenails. When choosing shoes:

Ensure they fit well and provide proper support.

Look for good arch support and cushioning.

Choose shoes suitable for your walking activities; for instance, hiking requires shoes with good traction and ankle support.

           Considering Walking Terrain

The terrain impacts your footwear choice:

For uneven or rocky paths, opt for hiking boots or shoes with rugged soles for added traction.

On pavement or hard surfaces, select shoes with extra cushioning to absorb impact.

           Adapting to Weather Conditions

           Weather influences your walking experience:

In wet or snowy conditions, wear waterproof or water-resistant shoes to keep your feet dry.

In hot weather, choose breathable and lightweight shoes to keep your feet cool.

           Pre- and Post-Walk Foot Care

Stretch your feet and ankles before walking to prevent injuries.

After walking, remove shoes and socks to let your feet breathe.

Soaking your feet in warm water can soothe tired muscles and alleviate aches.

National Walking Month is an excellent time to focus on foot health. Enjoy the outdoors, breathe in the fresh air, and take care of your feet along the way!

Explore common causes of foot pain during walking, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, Morton's neuroma, stress fractures, and arthritis. Learn about symptoms and when to seek professional evaluation.

There are so many health benefits to walking and we know just how debilitating it can be when foot pain stops you in your tracks. Whether you walk to stay fit, take the kids to school, walk your dog or clear your mind, we want to make sure you’re doing it pain free.

           What’s causing the pain?

There are many possible reasons why your foot may hurt when you walk and we’ve summarised some of the main common causes below:

           Plantar fasciitis:

This is a condition where the plantar fascia, a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, becomes inflamed. It is often caused by overuse, such as from running or standing for long periods of time. The pain can vary from mild to severe and is often present first thing in the morning or after periods of rest but this is not always the case. You can

           Achilles tendinopathy:

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. When this tendon becomes inflamed, it can cause pain in the back of the heel that worsens with walking or running. The causes of chronic damage to the Achilles tendon include poor foot and ankle function, unsupportive footwear, changes to activity levels or training errors or some medical conditions.

           Morton's neuroma:

This is a thickening of the tissue around the nerves that lead to your toes. It can cause pain and a burning sensation in the ball of your foot.

           Stress fractures:

These are small cracks in the bones of your foot that can occur from overuse or repetitive stress.

           Arthritis:

Various forms of arthritis can cause foot pain, particularly in the joints of the foot.

Biomechanical assessment - What to expect.

           If you’re suffering with the following;

           ● Foot pain

           ● Ankle pain

           ● Heel pain

           ● Shin pain

           ● Knee pain

Then we recommend booking in to see us for a biomechanical assessment.

The foot is a complex structure with 28 different bones, 214 ligaments and 38muscles and we want to make sure it’s all working properly and get you back to what you enjoy doing best!

But what does the assessment entail?

It involves an examination of the lower limbs and we look at their structure, alignment, strengths and weaknesses. The assessment typically includes the following:

           Medical history:

We will ask about your medical history, including any previous injuries, surgeries, or conditions that may affect your movement.

           Physical examination:

We will perform a physical examination to assess your posture, range of motion, strength, and flexibility.

           Gait analysis:

We will observe and analyse your walking pattern, looking for any deviations, imbalances, or compensations that may be causing pain or affecting performance. We’ll also ask you to bring a selection of pairs of shoes e.g. work, casual, sports etc. and any previous insoles and orthotics.

After the assessment, we will recommend exercises, stretches, or other interventions to improve your biomechanics and reduce pain or improve performance.

We only believe in using evidence based treatment options, to get you back on your feet and back to what you enjoy doing best as quickly as possible.

It is important to wear comfortable clothing that allows for a full range of motion during the assessment, and to come prepared with any questions or concerns you may have!

           What can cause them?

            Genetic or hereditary factors

How do I know if I have one?

            Pain or tenderness

Redness around the side of the toenail

Swelling of the tissue around the toenail

Pus, discharge, or signs of infection

           What are my treatment options?

If you've had the ingrown toenail for only a few weeks, it may heal if the nail is cut properly and the wound is allowed to heal. However, if the ingrowing toenail has been present for a while, recurs, or keeps getting infected, we would suggest nail surgery.

What does surgery involve and what are the benefits?

Surgery involves painlessly removing the infected portion of the nail under local anaesthetic. Depending on your symptoms, the shape of your nail, your medical history, and occupation, we may recommend removing one side of the nail, both sides, or the whole toenail.

The benefits? Surgery will eradicate the pain and offer a permanent and simple solution!

How long will it take me to recover?

After surgery, we'll schedule a redressing appointment within 3-7 days. You'll need to redress your toe for 4-6 weeks. We'll guide you on how to change the dressing and keep your toe clean.

Consider your choice of footwear for a couple of weeks after the surgery; plan for open sandal-style shoes to accommodate the dressing. Rest your foot as much as possible and plan for a few weeks without sports.

Most of us know that podiatrists are foot health specialists and a lot more besides, but what actually happens when you visit a podiatrist?

Should you bring anything with you, what questions will you be asked, do you need to wear anything in particular, what happens next?

Here’s our handy guide to your first podiatrist consultation, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.

           What Should I Bring?

Just your good self is absolutely fine, but if you have any reports from previous consultations you think may be relevant please bring them along. If you don’t have these, that’s ok as we’ll be doing a thorough assessment anyway.

Do I Need a Podiatrist Referral?

No, you don’t, although if you happen to have one, that’s great. Again, we’ll be checking you out very carefully before proceeding, so a podiatrist referral isn’t necessary at all.

What Should I Wear and What About Footwear?

We’re happy so long as you’re comfortable. It’s a good idea to wear your everyday shoes though, but don’t worry if that isn’t convenient.

           What Happens on Arrival?

The initial consultation gives us a chance to get to know you, so we’ll do a comprehensive assessment to find out exactly how we can help. This will cover your foot and general health and details of past problems and treatments, if applicable. We’ll make a note of any medication you take, allergies you may have and anything you need to tell us.

The first visit can vary from person to person, depending on their symptoms. The following is a general overview, as everything we do is tailored to your individual needs.

And, of course, you can ask as many questions as you like. That’s what we’re here for.

           Examination

We’ll start by carefully examining your feet. Then we’ll move on to the lower limbs. These include everything from the toes to the hips, so that means feet, ankles, lower legs, knees, upper legs and pelvis. It’s all connected after all and problems with toes and feet can easily affect joints and muscles further up, and vice versa.

For issues like ingrown toenails, verrucae or fungal infections we’ll also examine the skin and nails, and we may be able to start treatment at once.

           Treatment Plan

From here we’ll advise you on the best course of action. We’ll let you know if further treatment is needed and arrange a schedule for you if this is the case. We’ll also give you advice on general foot health and advise you how to keep everything healthy.

           Preliminary Biomechanical Assessment

If you suffer from a biomechanical-related issue we can do a pre-biomechanical assessment today. This can be followed by a full biomechanical assessment at a later date. This is a thorough examination of the lower limbs from toes to pelvis. It helps with a host of issues including postural problems, gait issues, sports injuries and Achilles problems.

           Everyone’s Welcome

Young, old, in between – everyone’s welcome. We’re here for specific issues, general foot health or simply an MOT for your feet (always a good thing!).

And don’t forget, you can guarantee that you’re in highly experienced hands.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Discover how ESWT, a non-invasive treatment, can provide effective pain relief and accelerate healing for conditions like plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon disorders.

What is it and how can it help me?

Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment which can provide fast and effective pain relief for various injuries and conditions. It works really well if you’re suffering from Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles tendon disorders.

The technical bit; How does it work?

ESWT sends acoustic shock waves into bone or soft tissue, in effect reinjuring the area on a cellular level and breaking up the scarring that has penetrated tendons and ligaments. The controlled reinjuring of tissue allows the body to regenerate blood vessels and bone cells.

           How will it help me?

Shockwave therapy can accelerate the healing process by stimulating your body's natural responses and there is usually an immediate reduction of pain and improved ease of movement.

There is growing evidence of its effectiveness in speeding up healing and pain relief in the treatment of stubborn muscle and tendon injuries which have not responded to other treatments. This means you can get back to doing what you love quicker!

           Is the treatment painful?

You may experience some discomfort during treatment but the pain should be tolerable. Due to the analgesic effect of Shockwave Therapy many patients report immediate pain relief following treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically, 3 to 5 sessions may be all you need. We also offer this treatment in combination with exercise therapy, taping and foot orthoses.

What should I do after the treatment?

There are no restrictions after the treatment session and you may continue with moderate activities. Do not use anti-inflammatory medication or ibuprofen and avoid the use of ice as these will affect the body’s inflammatory and healing process stimulated by the shockwave treatment.
